What are our Kindles made of?

Choose a part of the Kindle to explore.

A few of our group members had kindles as kids, and Dakota still uses one to this day. As younger aspiring engineers, we were curious about what is actually inside of the kindles we were using. Over the course of this project, we satisfied our childish dream of taking apart a Kindle and seeing for ourselves the materials inside of it.

We looked closely at two parts of the Kindle. The first is the transparent electrode that makes the e-ink screen work. The second is the thin stainless-steel cover that sits between the reader and a lithium-ion battery. We performed a variety of tests on the chosen products, along with researching the feasibility of recycling each of them.
